Overcoming Odds

Night by Elie Wiesel is a perfect example of defying the odds. His story of surviving the Halocaust is so humbling and unbelievable. Being a 13-year-old in a concentration camp is unthinkable. His stories of what he saw make his survival seem unreal. Being out in the elements for years, eating very very little food, food that was not good and who knows how it was prepared. Making it past all the selections and also the brutality of the guards. His story is so compelling and inspirational somehow. I can't imagine being in his situation but knowing now what he went through makes everything i face seem like a tiny bump in the road.

War in Iraq

The war in Iraq i guess you can say has calmed down a little. Although Iraqi political leaders were given more authority in their country, things like bombings are still just as big as an issue as they were when the war broke out. President Obama has planned to have all combat troops out by august next year and all others out by December the year after though so the end is near. This war has been a very controversial one but with the end supposed to be coming it seems to be less of an issue.

Imperialism

Imperialism was the popular thing in the late 1800s. Every big nation seemed to be grabbing their slice of Africa. Before Africa there was the Americas. Spain and Portugal dominated South and Central America, while Britain and France took their piece in North America. Reasons for these countries to do this was always to increase their empires, increase their wealth, but they also said they would civilize the current inhabitants. Many of the native people would end up fighting back and with good reason. People in the old world believed anybody who didn't live like they did, or didn't have the technology they did was uncivil. They couldn't have been further from the truth. In most cases the native people were happy the way they were. In some cases it also caused war and continous conflicts amongst the new and the old. Imperialism may have ended up benefiting all, but it could have just as easliy hurt all the new places that were colonized

Global Warming

Global warming is becoming a part of our everyday lives nowadays. People are buying hybrid vehicles trying to keep energy cost down and go green. Buses are becoming "green" buses and the is a race to find alternate feul. At a meeting at the UN studies showed a trend of warming over the last 50 years, and its very likely that humans are a cause. The only change from a 2001 report is the word very. I think that that one word has caused more people to be involved and be aware of global warming. I also think that there are studies that show that global warming is not really a new thing, but that is like a cycle. The earth has had warm periods, and then gone into an ice age. Whatever the case, everyone should be aware and try to go "greener", not just to save our planet, but to increase living circumstances, and air quality and all that good stuff

bollywood

India has its own version of Hollywood, Bollywood. Bollywood does not just attract Indian artists and actors, but some of Hollywood's celebrities. Among them are musicians like Eric Clapton and Madonna. They are not the only ones though. Snoop Dogg has also recently hit the Bollywood scene with a movie that will come out in august. He is in the video of the opening song in the movie. Hip hop is growing in popularity in India and Indian music is affecting hip hop as well. Many beats are being sampled in hip hop music now.

Entering the third period the score was 2-1, Canada. Not much could be said about either teams performance. Then Crosby went on a rampage. He kept up with the physical play and then added his offensive game into it. He was out only because his linemates were changing so it was a 1 on 3. Crosby did 3 spectacular moves to get around the defense, and then finish it off with a score. Crosby single handedly walked around the defense to add another goal to his teams lead. The next shift after his goal, his team gave up a goal making it 3-2. This is one of the worst things a team can do in a game. When Crosby went back out his team had the puck in the offensive zone the whole shift, with him carrying the load. He had set up his linemates multiple times before finally pushing a rebound into the net. His team would not make the same mistake twice, and again on his next shift he set up a goal ending the game with 3 points. His spectacular play was beyond already high expectations, and lead his team to victory

Even with Crosby's great play his team was down 1-0. Crosby be had drawn all kinds of attention. He had been getting slashed, hooked, and at all times the swiss were finishing their checks. One play at center ice Crosby had been hit late after the whistle across the head and went straight to the ice. His parents were easy to pick out. Gare Joyce had wondered if this could be a play that ends Crosby's career. But just then with the help of teammates and a trainer he got up and made his way to the bench. He made it known he wasn't happy about what just happened. When he got to the bench he told his coach that he wanted to get back out their as soon as possible. Within minutes he was back out there. He wasn't just out there, he was hitting everyone on the other team. If that isn't toughness I don't know what is
